INTRODUCTION

DEPARTMENT OF PALLIATIVE MEDICINE

Palliative care services was started as a sub-unit by Department of Anesthesiology in the year 1988.The unit started with a doctor, nurse and a pharmacist as a team .The unit has the credit of being one of the pioneers in obtaining and dispensing oral morphine solution as early as 1988, since then many patients had the privilege of pain control with oral morphine solution and continuing care.

In the year 2009 it branched into a separate department as Department of Palliative Medicine. In the last two decades the department has taken care of 50.000 patients needing palliative care services. The palliative care networks with hospice and home care services in Bangalore. At present it has a multi- disciplinary team of doctors, nurses, pharmacist, social worker and volunteers. It has out- patient services which functions 6 days a week and has 20 beds for inpatients. With a good team and support of large number of dedicated volunteers the department has expanded to incorporate, a day care Centre as a recreational services for patients and caretakers in a day of every week. 

         

FACILITIES

SERVICE PROVIDED IN THE DEPARTMENT 

1. Lymphedema clinic which is managed by using lymphatic machine.

2. Group therapy is conducted twice week where in the caretakers are being taught how to take care of the patients at home.

3. Counseling is conducted by the team /team member by the given prior time for the patients and caretakers.

4. Art therapy has been recently introduced as a means to address the emotional aspects of the patients and caretakers.

5. Rehabilitation (supported by volunteers) for caretakers like handmade paper cover making ,sewing , wire basket making 

ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES :

1. Essentials of Palliative Care Course which is conducted twice a year, recognised by Indian Association of Palliative Care.

2. Fellowship programme for post MD/MS for one year since 2014 affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.

3. Initiation to start MD in Palliative Medicine is under process.

4. Out- reaches programmes (camps) to remote rural areas to deliver awareness of palliative care services.

5. National and International workshops.

6. Department has to its credit of hosting two International Conferences in the year 2000 and 2013.

7. Kidwai Cancer Institute with the Government of Karnataka has launched the Karnataka State Policy (3rd State to introduce) to ensure Palliative Care services to reach all the areas in Karnataka and to make the availability of essentials drugs of palliative care.

Achievements :

1. Kidwai was recognized as the 3rd Best cancer Hospital in India by Week Magazine survey in 2017.

2. President of India Mr. Pranav Mukherjee visited Kidwai in December 2015 for foundation laying ceremony of SCI project

3. Vice-President of India Mr. Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated SCI block in June 2018 first of its kind in India.

4. Visited Papua New Guinea as an advisor to start Oncology services in November 2018.

5. Worked for getting State Palliative care policy in 2017 from Govt of Karnataka.

Worked as an Anaesthesiologist for 4 years. Subsequently, completed my post graduate course in Palliative Care from King's College, London, U.K and Fellowship in Palliative Care from KMIO, India.

 I have been faculty for the Essentials of Palliative Care course conducted by the Indian Association of Palliative Care, and the State palliative care policy training program under which training is imparted to district and taluk level doctors, nurses and pharmacists.

Research and Study :      

1) Paper on systematic review of effectiveness of opioids in the management of   break through pain. 

2) Incidence of pain among inpatients at a regional cancer centre in India

Books: co-author; Guide to Palliative Care, as part of Karnataka Palliative Care Policy implementation

WORK EXPERIENCE :

I, Dr.K.Harish MBBS,DA., joined Kidwai Cancer Institute Department of Palliative medicine in January 2016 as Assistant surgeon ,since then my day to day activities are to attend ward rounds, doing bed side procedure like ascitic tapping and pleural tapping, attending to patients complaints for their well being and also seeing out patients in the OPD.

I am attending to all emergency service and giving best patient care.

Pain relief is my first criteria to the suffering patients.

I have attended to approximately 22,000 patients both inpatients as well as outpatients and attended the reference given by the other departments for pain relief.

In the Department we are doing seminars and case presentation regarding patients regularly.

weekly once attending day care programme.

Attending seminars and conferences regularly to keep ourselfs updated.

I am conducting classes to postgraduate students, nurses and social workers.

Possess sound knowledge of Health care services .

Possess sound judgement and analytical skills.

Familier with operating systems like microsoft power point , Excel word and internet.

Has ability to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously.

Effective command over verbal and written communication with good interpersonal skills.

Qualification : Diploma in Pharmacy

Foundation Course to Palliative Care

4weeks course in Paediatric Palliative Care (Tata Memorial Hospital)

WORK EXPERIENCE: 20yrs as Pharmacist at Department of Palliative Medicine

Preparation of Oral Morphine solution from Morphine sulphate powder and dispensing the same according to the prescribed strength to the patients. Documentation and maintenance of records pertaining to Narcotic Drugs.

ACADEMICS :As a team member have participated and attended Conferences and workshops  .I have been faculty and Course co-ordinator for Essentials of Palliative Care Course and Part of the working team committee for State Palliative Care Policy implementation.

I had the opportunity to design the cover page handbook logo for the hand book “Guide to Palliative Care”for implementation of State Palliative Care Policy

ACHIEVEMENTS:

II Best poster award for the poster “ORAL MORPHINE SOLUTION AS MOUTH GARGLE/RINSE FOR ORAL MUCOSITIS” at International Conference of Indian Association of Palliative Care held at Delhi in 2009. HONORARY MENTION for the poster presentation at e-Palliative Care Network & Was Interviewed (Audio) by Dr Parag Bhardwaj of E- Palliative Care Network in 2009. Recipient of Rosalie Shaw APHC 2017 Bursary to attend APHN Conference in Singapore for presenting a poster on ALGI-PACK. Recipient of Bursary to attend Academy Week at St Christopher’s Academy United Kingdom in 2017.
